Royan, City of Art and History

Royan's label of City of Art and History was an ambitious gamble that paid off!

Created in 1985 by the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the label "Cities and Countries of Art and History" is awarded to jurisdictions that commit to conducting an active approach to promoting the heritage and Awareness architecture and the environment.

Royan is one of the few cities rebuilt after World War II to obtain this precious label, after Le Havre and Lorient.

By the signing in 2011 of an agreement between the State and the City of Royan, the label guarantees the quality of enforcement actions heritage and the competence of qualified and approved by the Ministry.

Today, Royan is up to the national network of 163 cities or regions of art and history, along with Rochefort, Saintes, Cognac, Thouars, Parthenay, Poitiers, and countries of the Angoumois, the Confolentais of Mellois , and the Montmorillonnais Châtelleraudais in Poitou-Charentes region.

City goals and Countries of Art and History and tasks of the facilitator Heritage :

- Present the heritage and participate in its preservation, in all its components

- Educate people to their surroundings, architecture, heritage and urban planning,

- Introduce young audiences to these areas, through educational activities in and outside school time,

- Promote quality architectural and landscape, and cultivate a quality cultural tourism

A preparatory mission (development of scientific and cultural project) of the future Centre of Interpretation of Architecture and Heritage (CIAP ° is also devoted to the host Heritage. This place will centralize information resources, exhibitions and educational activities on the urban environment and its evolution.
