Natural heritage and exceptional landscape
At the mouth of the Gironde estuary and near numerous remarkable natural spaces, Royan has an exceptional natural heritage and landscape. Faced with the richness and the large number of services provided by this heritage, it is our duty to study, preserve and inform people about these extraordinary resources.
This is why, in the heart of some of the most humid zones on the Atlantic coast and opposite the last great savage estuary in Europe, our team is committed to preserving the biodiversity of the area through numerous projects.
Projects to monitor water quality and natural spaces, to maintain and develop the surroundings in order to conserve them and even projects to research into consumer habits and more eco-friendly practices have led to the creation of a Environment and Sustainable Development Unit.
Monitoring bathing Water
In order to satisfy statutory changes, the commune of Royan has decided, in addition to the official analyses carried out by the Regional Health Agency (ARS), to actively monitor the quality of its water.
We are self-monitoring by regularly testing (from Monday to Friday) the quality of bathing water, and by monitoring weather conditions and potential sources of pollution. The aim is to ensure the health and safety of swimmers, to anticipate any potential deterioration, to react as quickly as possible in the event of a crisis and to participate in efforts for the sustainable protection of the coastline.
The results of these analyses on bathing water are posted at the entrance to beaches near the first aid posts, in the town hall, in the Local Tourist Office, at various tourist information points as well as on the town’s website.
These results are made public as soon as possible and no later than the beginning of the afternoon (2pm) from 15th June to 15th September.
